Cigarette taxes have been on the rise, and in some states, through the roof. If you live in New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts or New York you know this all too well. Below you will find a listing of the Cigarette Excise Taxes effective January 2004 by state.
Another 17 states have raised taxes effective 2004 with no end in sight. Also remember that some counties and cities may impose additional taxes per pack on top of the state taxes listed below. The most famous being New York City - which charges an extra $1.50 per pack on top of the already sky high state excise tax.
